EV Charging Session Won’t Start — What to Try First

Most “won’t start” problems at public chargers are not mysterious — they are app, payment, connector, or a bad stall. Work through the flow below before you lose half an hour at one pole.

Six-step flowchart for fixing an EV charging session that will not start
Follow the steps in order — most failures are fixed by step 3 or 4.

Step-by-step at the stall

Confirm you are at the right network

ChargePoint, Electrify America, EVgo, Tesla, Blink, and independent hosts each use their own apps. The network name is on our station page and on the physical label — opening the wrong app is the #1 cause of “nothing happens.”

Check payment and account holds

Update the network app, add a valid card, and look for an idle session still open on your account. Some sites pre-authorize a hold before the plug energizes.

Match connector and port

CCS, NACS/Tesla, CHAdeMO, or J1772 — plug firmly until you hear the latch. On dual-head units, select the correct port in the app. Unlock the car charge port first if your model requires it.

Try the next stall

If stall 2A will not start, walk to 2B or the next pedestal. Single-port hardware failures are extremely common — do not assume the whole site is broken.

One calm retry

Cancel in the app, unplug, wait 30 seconds, retry once. If it fails twice, your time is better spent driving to a backup.

Plug-first vs app-first

Plug-first networks

  • Connect the cable, then authorize in the app
  • Wait for “communicating” or preparing state
  • Common on many ChargePoint and EA stalls

App-first networks

  • Tap Start in the app, then plug in
  • Screen on the pole may show a countdown
  • Read the sticker — guessing wastes time

FAQ

Do I need a different app for every network?

Often yes for activation and payment. The station page lists the network name — open that network’s app or RFID before you plug in.

Should I plug in before or after starting the app session?

Follow the on-screen instructions at the stall. Many networks want plug-first; others want you to tap Start in the app before connecting.

How do I find another charger quickly?

Use Near Me with location enabled, or filter DC fast on the statewide map if you need a fast top-up.
